Voltage Stability

Stability & Dynamics Updated: 2026-03-16

Voltage stability is the ability of the power system to maintain acceptable voltage magnitudes at all buses during normal operation and after being subjected to disturbances. It is closely linked to the balance of reactive power supply and demand across the network.

When the system cannot provide enough reactive support, voltage may decline progressively as load increases or as the network becomes weaker after outages. If that process continues without corrective action, the result can be voltage collapse and widespread service interruption.

Key Aspects of Voltage Stability:

  • Reactive Power Driven: Voltage stability is strongly influenced by the availability and location of reactive power. A bus can become unstable even when thermal loading is still within limits if reactive reserve is insufficient.
  • Local and Area Effects: The phenomenon often begins locally at weak buses or load pockets, but the consequences can spread across a much larger area. That is why local compensation decisions can have system-wide reliability value.
  • Assessment Tools: Engineers use PV curves, QV curves, post-contingency load flow, and modal or sensitivity methods to estimate margin. These tools help identify the weakest buses and the most effective reactive support locations.
  • Dynamic Support Need: Static devices such as capacitor banks are useful, but dynamic sources like generators, SVCs, and STATCOMs are often necessary to sustain voltage during fast disturbances. Their response speed matters as much as their steady-state rating.
  • Operating Margin: Operators monitor voltage stability margin more carefully in heavily loaded summer conditions, after transmission outages, or in areas with long electrically weak connections. Margin can deteriorate quickly when multiple stress factors combine.
