Photovoltaic, usually abbreviated PV, refers to the technology that converts sunlight directly into electricity through the photovoltaic effect in semiconductor materials. In power-system applications, PV is one of the main forms of inverter-based renewable generation, ranging from rooftop systems to large utility-scale plants.

PV output depends on irradiance, module temperature, orientation, shading, and inverter control. Because the modules produce direct current, a power-conversion stage is required to interface with the AC grid and to manage how the plant behaves electrically.

Key Aspects of Photovoltaic Generation:

  • Module-to-Plant Structure: PV cells are assembled into modules, modules into strings, and strings into arrays or blocks connected to inverters. Performance depends both on module characteristics and on how the balance-of-system is designed.
  • Resource and Temperature Dependence: Higher irradiance generally increases output, while higher module temperature usually reduces conversion efficiency. This is why cool sunny conditions can produce stronger PV performance than very hot ones.
  • Inverter Interface: PV generation is inherently DC, so grid connection depends on inverter control for synchronization, power regulation, reactive support, and ride-through behavior. The plant's grid impact is therefore partly a control-design question rather than only a module question.
  • Operational Variability: Cloud movement can create fast power changes, especially in distributed PV fleets or regions with unstable weather. Forecasting, storage, and plant-level controls help manage that variability.
  • System Role: PV has become a major driver of midday energy supply, price formation, and network loading patterns in many markets. Its impact goes well beyond annual energy, it also reshapes ramping needs, curtailment patterns, and distribution planning.
