Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT)
Maximum power point tracking, usually abbreviated MPPT, is the control process used to keep a renewable generator operating at the point where it can extract the most power from the available resource. It is most commonly associated with photovoltaic systems, but the same general idea also applies to wind-turbine operation.
The optimal operating point changes as irradiance, temperature, wind speed, and equipment conditions change. MPPT algorithms therefore adjust voltage, current, torque, or speed continuously so the plant stays close to the best available efficiency point.
Key Aspects of MPPT:
- Variable Optimum: The maximum power point is not fixed. In PV systems it shifts with irradiance and module temperature, while in wind systems it depends on aerodynamic operating conditions and turbine control mode.
- Converter Interaction: MPPT is usually implemented through the inverter or a DC-DC stage that adjusts the operating voltage or current of the source. The control loop must be fast enough to track changing conditions without causing instability or excessive oscillation.
- Common Algorithms: Practical methods include perturb-and-observe, incremental conductance, and model-based approaches. The choice affects tracking speed, robustness, and behavior under rapidly changing weather.
- Energy Yield Importance: Effective MPPT improves annual energy harvest and plant economics because even small efficiency losses accumulate over many operating hours. Poor tracking can leave a resource consistently below its available output.
- System Constraints: MPPT may be intentionally limited by curtailment commands, thermal limits, battery charging constraints, or grid-support requirements. In those situations, the control objective shifts from maximum resource capture to coordinated system operation.
