FACTS devices, short for Flexible AC Transmission System devices, are power-electronics based controllers used to improve the controllability and performance of AC transmission networks. They help system operators influence voltage, impedance, phase angle, and reactive power in ways that are not possible with passive network elements alone.

The strategic value of FACTS technology is that it can increase the usefulness of existing transmission infrastructure without always requiring new line construction. In stressed networks, this can improve transfer capability, voltage control, and stability margins while reducing congestion or loop-flow problems.

Key Aspects of FACTS Devices:

  • Control-Oriented Purpose: FACTS devices are installed to actively influence how power flows and how the grid responds dynamically. Their purpose is not just compensation, but controllability of key transmission parameters.
  • Main Device Families: Shunt devices such as SVC and STATCOM primarily support voltage and reactive power, while series devices such as TCSC or SSSC influence line impedance or effective transfer characteristics. Combined devices like UPFC can control multiple variables at once.
  • Transfer and Congestion Benefit: By shaping flows and supporting voltage, FACTS devices can increase secure transfer capability and relieve overloaded corridors. This can delay or reduce the need for network reinforcement in some cases.
  • Dynamic-System Value: FACTS technology can help with oscillation damping, transient performance, voltage recovery, and management of weak-grid conditions. The benefit depends heavily on the placement of the device and the control objectives used.
  • Economic Tradeoff: FACTS devices are technically powerful but capital intensive and application specific. Their business case depends on whether controllability benefits justify the cost relative to alternatives such as network expansion, generation redispatch, or operational constraints.
