Electricity price forecasting is the process of estimating future wholesale power prices by modeling both market behavior and physical system constraints. Good forecasts must account for fuel costs, carbon prices, demand evolution, renewable output, outages, interconnection limits, and the rules of the market being studied.

Unlike simple commodity forecasting, electricity price forecasting is tightly linked to network physics and dispatch logic. The value of a forecast depends not only on statistical skill, but also on how well the model represents congestion, scarcity periods, and the interaction between variable renewables and flexible resources.

Key Aspects of Electricity Price Forecasting:

• Driven by Physical and Economic Inputs: Fuel prices, carbon costs, weather, reservoir conditions, demand growth, outages, and transmission constraints can all materially shift price outcomes. A credible forecast must connect these drivers coherently.
• Multiple Time Horizons: Short-term forecasting supports trading and dispatch, while medium and long-term forecasting supports investment, PPA negotiation, storage valuation, and merchant-risk analysis. The relevant methods differ by horizon.
• Need for Market-Specific Modeling: Forecast design depends on whether the market uses zonal pricing, nodal pricing, capacity payments, scarcity adders, or other specific mechanisms. Generic price models often miss important local features.
• Renewables Increase Complexity: High renewable penetration makes prices more weather-sensitive and can produce more zero or negative price intervals. Capturing these nonlinear effects is now essential rather than optional.
• Forecasts Are Decision Tools, Not Certainties: The best use of price forecasting is usually scenario-based rather than purely point-based. Robust analysis examines downside, upside, and structural-change cases instead of relying on one central trajectory.
