A circuit breaker is the primary switching device used to interrupt fault current and to connect or disconnect equipment under defined operating conditions. In substations and industrial systems, it is the final device that physically clears the fault after the protection relay issues a trip command.

Breaker performance is critical because electrical faults impose very high thermal and mechanical stress in a very short time. The breaker must interrupt the current safely, control the arc, and recover insulation strength fast enough to prevent restrike.

Key Aspects of Circuit Breakers:

  • Protection Interface: A circuit breaker works together with relays, CTs, VTs, and control circuits. The relay decides when to trip, but the breaker is the device that actually opens the faulted circuit.
  • Main Ratings: Important ratings include nominal voltage, continuous current, short-circuit interrupting capacity, short-time withstand current, and making current. These values must match the maximum duty expected at the installation point.
  • Interruption Technology: Modern breakers commonly use vacuum or SF6 interruption at medium and high voltage, while older installations may use oil or air-blast designs. The arc extinction medium affects maintenance requirements, environmental considerations, and application range.
  • Operating Time: Breaker opening speed contributes directly to total fault clearing time. Fast operation reduces equipment damage, improves transient stability, and limits the spread of voltage depression during severe faults.
  • Maintenance Need: Breakers require periodic inspection of contacts, operating mechanisms, insulation condition, and trip circuits. A breaker that fails to open on command can turn a local fault into a much wider system problem.
