AC power flow (also called full power flow or load flow) is the complete, nonlinear analysis that computes voltage magnitudes and angles at every bus, and active and reactive power flows on every branch of an electrical network. It is the most fundamental and widely used calculation in power system engineering, providing the baseline from which all other studies (fault analysis, stability, planning) depart.

Key Aspects of AC Power Flow:

  • Nonlinear Equations: The power balance at each bus produces two nonlinear equations (one for active power, one for reactive power) involving the voltages and angles of that bus and all its neighbors. For a system with N buses, this yields roughly 2N coupled nonlinear equations that must be solved simultaneously.
  • Iterative Solution: Because the equations are nonlinear, AC power flow requires iterative numerical methods. Newton-Raphson is the standard choice, offering quadratic convergence in 3–5 iterations for well-conditioned systems. Fast Decoupled and Gauss-Seidel are alternatives with different speed and robustness trade-offs.
  • Complete Results: Unlike DC power flow, AC power flow provides voltage magnitudes (critical for equipment safety and voltage stability assessment), reactive power flows (essential for voltage control), and accurate transmission losses (typically 2–5% of total generation), giving a full picture of the system operating state.
  • Modeling Fidelity: AC power flow accounts for transformer tap positions, phase-shifting transformers, switched shunt devices, generator reactive power limits (PV-to-PQ bus switching), and area interchange controls, enabling a highly realistic representation of actual grid operating conditions.
  • Applications: AC power flow is used in day-ahead and real-time operational planning, security-constrained dispatch, voltage stability assessment, transmission expansion planning, interconnection studies, and as the inner engine of optimal power flow and contingency analysis tools.
